Solo travel is an exhilarating journey that allows us to explore new horizons, immerse ourselves in different cultures, and create unforgettable memories. However, amidst the excitement, it's common to feel the pressure of constantly having to do something, visit a landmark, explore new restaurants, bars, and clubs, walk around, or engage in activities and meet new people! It's vital to recognize that taking a day off is not only acceptable but essential for maintaining balance and well-being. So yes, it's okay to do nothing for a day or two, and you're not alone in feeling guilty or anxious about it! In this blog post, we’ll explore the anxiety associated with the pressure of always being on the go while solo traveling and provide practical tips to overcome it.
1. Acknowledge the Importance of Rest:
Solo travel can be physically and mentally demanding. Recognize that rest and relaxation are crucial for recharging your energy levels, maintaining mental clarity, and preventing burnout. Embrace the idea that taking a day off doesn't mean you're missing out, or wasting your time; instead, it allows you to fully appreciate the experiences that lie ahead.
2. Prioritize Self-Care:
Self-care should be a top priority during your solo travel journey. Use your day off to engage in activities that rejuvenate you, such as reading a book, relaxing in the sun, practicing meditation, enjoying a spa day, or simply relaxing outside. This dedicated time for self-nurturing will help alleviate any anxiety or guilt associated with taking a break. As an example; whilst solo traveling in Indonesia, Bali, on my “off” days, instead of feeling guilty for doing “nothing”, I decided to use this time to soak up the sun, and work on my tan. I perceived each tan session as productive. As my tan started to develop I felt like I was not wasting time, however, optimizing it on my own terms, without feeling the guilt to go out and explore! It really is the smaller things that count. Use your creativity to set goals, one day at a time to help alleviate this feeling of anxiety, and pressure to do something productive.
3. Embrace Slow Travel:

Instead of rushing from one destination to another, consider embracing the concept of slow travel. Spend more time in a single location, allowing yourself to delve deeper into the local culture, connect with the community, and truly absorb the essence of the place. This approach encourages a more relaxed pace, granting you the freedom to take breaks without feeling guilty. A perfect example of this is slowing down your day by watching a sunset, this was my slow travel moment in Bali. I would watch the sunset alone, between a crowd of strangers, and feel at complete ease with myself and my surroundings. Up to this day, I can still feel that true feeling of pure contentment.
4. Plan Rest Days Ahead:
When planning your itinerary, be intentional about including rest days. Allocate specific days when you have no commitments or activities scheduled. This pre-planned downtime will give you something to look forward to and ensure that you allow yourself the opportunity to recharge. Knowing that you have planned rest days, gives you the space to slow down and to experience less guilt due to “gaps” in your itinerary.
5. Practice Mindfulness and Reflection:
Use your day off to practice mindfulness and reflect on your solo travel experiences. Take a moment to appreciate your journey, the places you've visited, and the personal growth you've achieved. Engage in activities like journaling or sketching to capture your thoughts and emotions. This reflective practice will help you appreciate the value of taking breaks and allow you to connect with yourself on a deeper level. I always take these moments to be reminded of the people I have met, and the stories I've heard. That makes me so excited to meet more people, embrace more stories, and come to the realization, that I too, have an interesting story!
6. Embrace Spontaneity:
While planning your solo travel adventures is essential, leave room for spontaneity.
Allow yourself the freedom to wake up one morning and decide to take the day off.
Embracing these unexpected pauses can lead to incredible serendipitous
experiences and a sense of liberation from the pressure to constantly be on the move. I have a special story when it comes to embracing spontaneity. It was the evening before my 25th birthday, I decided to go to a beach club called Savaya, by myself. At first, I was socially anxious and awkward, however, later that evening I met an incredible group of people. They celebrated me that evening like we had known each other for a lifetime. The kindness I received that evening is a memory and feeling I will continue to carry with me. All thanks to a moment of spontaneity!
Overcoming the pressure of constantly having to do something while solo traveling is crucial for maintaining a healthy and enjoyable journey. Remember that taking a day off is not a sign of weakness or lack of effort, but a way to honor your well-being and personal needs. Embrace the pause, prioritize self-care, and engage in activities that allow you to recharge and reflect. By doing so, you'll enhance your overall solo travel experience and create lasting memories that are not solely defined by the places you've visited, but also by the moments of stillness and self-discovery along the way. Be proud to take a day off, and don’t guilt trip yourself or feel anxious because your solo journey looks a little different, it's ok! Be brave!
